Why is it called Alexander Technique?
The Technique is based on the discoveries of the Tasmanian actor Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955)
F.M. as Alexander is affectionately known, lost his voice on stage and when doctors failed to help him he went on to make discoveries which allowed him to regain his voice.
F.M. wrote four books and many articles about these discoveries. In 1931 he started the first training school for teachers of his Technique in London.
Today there are Alexander Technique teacher training courses in many countries and over 2,500 teachers wordwide. My teacher in New Zealand (where I worked for two years) trained in South Africa.
